Five Suspects Remanded Over Assault on Kade SHTS Teacher Following CREP Intervention

Five suspects have been remanded into police custody by the Kade Circuit Court in connection with the violent assault on Mr. Michael Quayson, a teacher at Kade Senior High Technical School in the Eastern Region.

The suspects, who were arrested by the Cyber Security Unit of the Ghana Police Service, appeared before the court on Tuesday, January 7, 2026, and were remanded pending further investigations. They are expected to reappear in court on January 20, 2026.

According to available reports, the attack was allegedly carried out in retaliation for Mr. Quayson’s firm supervision during the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). His strict invigilation reportedly prevented examination malpractice, which angered some former students and is believed to have triggered the assault.

The incident, which came to public attention after a video of the attack went viral on social media, sparked nationwide outrage and renewed concerns about teacher safety, student indiscipline, and violence within Ghana’s educational institutions.

The Centre for Research and Education Policy (CREP) played a key role in drawing national attention to the matter. Following CREP’s public press statement condemning the assault and calling for urgent action, the Ghana Education Service (GES) issued an official response, while law enforcement agencies intensified investigations that have now led to the arrest and remand of the suspects.

CREP has welcomed the court’s decision, describing it as a significant step toward accountability and justice for teachers who face threats and violence in the line of duty. The organisation reiterated that no teacher should be punished for upholding discipline, enforcing examination integrity, or performing lawful professional responsibilities.

The case has also reignited calls for stronger collaboration among the GES, Ghana Police Service, teacher unions, parents, and communities to protect educators and restore discipline in schools.

CREP maintains that justice in this case must serve as a deterrent and a clear message that violence against teachers will not be tolerated under any circumstances. The organisation has pledged to continue monitoring the case and advocating for policies that ensure safe, respectful, and secure learning environments across the country.
