Matron Arrested Over Alleged Diversion of Students’ Food at Wovenu SHTS, Tadzewu

The Centre for Research and Education Policy (CREP Africa) has taken keen notice of emerging reports and circulating video footage concerning the alleged diversion of food supplies meant for students of Wovenu Senior High Technical School, Tadzewu, in the Ketu North Municipality of the Volta Region.

Video evidence shows the Assistant Matron of the school stepping out of a taxi with food items reportedly intended for students, following which she was intercepted by concerned community members and the Assembly Member.

It is learnt that the suspect has since been arrested by the Ghana Police Service and is currently in custody, assisting with investigations.

If confirmed, this incident represents a grave breach of public trust, gross administrative misconduct, and a direct violation of students’ fundamental right to adequate nutrition, welfare, and protection. The school feeding system exists to promote learning, safeguard student health, and ensure equity. Any act that undermines this objective must be condemned in the strongest terms.

CREP Africa commends the vigilance, civic responsibility, and courage demonstrated by the community members and the Assembly Member, whose timely intervention reportedly led to the interception of the food items and the subsequent arrest. Their actions underscore the critical role of community accountability in safeguarding public resources.

We hereby call on:

The Ghana Police Service to conduct thorough, impartial, and expeditious investigations,

The Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ministry of Education to initiate immediate administrative inquiries, and

The Municipal Education Directorate to strengthen monitoring, auditing, and supervisory systems within all second-cycle institutions.

CREP Africa further urges that any individual found culpable must face the full rigours of the law, without fear or favour, to serve as a strong deterrent against future misconduct.

We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to protecting students’ welfare, promoting transparency, enforcing accountability, and strengthening governance within Ghana’s education sector.

Signed:

CREP Africa
